"Natural," "premium," and "with real chicken" mean almost nothing on a pet food bag. The ingredient list and the AAFCO statement are where the truth lives.

Read the first five ingredients

Ingredients are listed by weight. The first five make up the bulk of the food. A named protein (chicken, salmon, beef) in the top two slots is what you want — not "meat by-products" or "animal digest".

Find the AAFCO statement

"Complete and balanced for [life stage]" is the line that matters. Without it, the food is supplemental at best.

Skip foods with vague ingredient names. If the bag won't tell you what animal the meat came from, that's a red flag.
