Betta fish are among the most mistreated pets simply because they are sold in tiny cups and bowls, giving the impression they need little space. In reality, a betta given a proper home lives longer, shows brighter colours and far more personality.
The right home
- A heated, filtered tank of at least a few litres — not a bowl or vase — with a gentle filter flow.
- A stable temperature in the tropical range; bettas are tropical fish and suffer in cold water.
- Live or silk plants and a hiding spot; avoid sharp decorations that tear their delicate fins.
Feeding and water
Bettas are carnivores and do best on a quality betta pellet, with occasional frozen or live treats. Feed small amounts and avoid overfeeding, which fouls the water. Cycle the tank and do regular partial water changes — clean, warm, stable water is the foundation of betta health.
One betta per tank
Male bettas are territorial and will fight, so never keep two males together. A single betta is content alone, and with the right setup will recognise its owner, flare and explore. Treat a betta as the tropical fish it is, not a decoration, and it will thrive for years.
