Fish don't have stomachs the way mammals do. Uneaten food rots in the tank, spikes ammonia, and makes everyone sick.
The two-minute rule
Feed only what your fish can finish in two minutes, once or twice a day. If food is still drifting after that, you fed too much.
Match the food to the fish
Floating flakes suit surface feeders. Sinking pellets suit bottom dwellers. Frozen or live foods make great occasional treats but shouldn't replace a balanced base diet.
One fast day per week gives your fish's digestive systems a break and reduces tank waste. Healthy fish handle it without complaint.
