A single fancy goldfish needs a minimum 20-gallon tank, and a common goldfish needs much more. The classic bowl is a slow death sentence.
The starting list
- A tank of appropriate size for the variety
- A filter rated for at least double the tank volume — goldfish are messy
- An air pump for oxygen
- A water test kit for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate
Cycle the tank before fish
A new tank needs 4–6 weeks of "cycling" — building up beneficial bacteria — before any fish goes in. Skip this step and your fish will die from ammonia poisoning.
Goldfish can live 15–20 years in proper conditions. Get the setup right and you're signing up for a long, rewarding pet relationship.
