Litter-box habits are one of the biggest reasons cats are surrendered, yet most problems trace back to a poor setup rather than a difficult cat. Getting the basics right with a new cat prevents trouble before it starts.
How many and where
The rule is one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Place them in quiet, low-traffic spots where the cat will not be ambushed or startled — never next to noisy appliances or right beside the food bowls. In a multi-level home, put one on each floor.
Box and litter choices
- Choose a box large enough for the cat to turn around comfortably; many commercial boxes are too small.
- Most cats prefer an unscented, fine-grained clumping litter.
- Start with the same litter type the cat used before, then change gradually if needed.
- Some cats dislike covered boxes, which trap odour — offer an open option too.
Keep it clean
Scoop at least once a day and do a full litter change and wash regularly. Cats are fastidious and will find somewhere else to go if the box is dirty. If a settled cat suddenly stops using the box, rule out a medical issue with your vet — urinary problems often show up this way.
