Pet stores are designed to make you feel underprepared. The truth is, almost every new pet needs a much shorter list than the brochures suggest.
Day-one essentials
- Food and water bowls sized to your pet
- The same food they were already eating
- A collar with an ID tag and a leash (for dogs)
- A safe bed or crate in a quiet corner
- Basic toys for chewing and play
Wait a week before buying
Skip the fancy bed, the designer carrier, and the third chew toy until you know your pet's preferences. A puppy who shreds plush toys doesn't need three of them.
Spend more on the things that touch your pet every day — bowls, beds, leashes — and less on the things that sit in a basket.
