Whether you're adding a second dog, a new cat, or pairing a dog with a cat, the rules are the same: slow is fast, and pressure backfires.
Start with scent, not sight
Swap blankets between pets for a few days before any face-to-face meeting. Letting them smell each other from a distance lowers the stakes when they finally meet.
Neutral ground for the first meeting
Meet in a place neither pet considers "theirs" — a quiet park or a friend's yard. Keep dogs leashed; let cats approach on their own terms.
Watch the body language, not the clock. A short, relaxed meeting beats a long tense one. End on a good note and try again tomorrow.
