Watching a pet struggle to jump onto a bed they've always slept on is hard. The good news is that mobility aids have become genuinely good — and most cost less than a vet visit.

Ramps and steps

For dogs, a long ramp (60–90 cm rise) is gentler on joints than steps. The slope should be no more than 18 degrees. Carpet or rubber tread matters more than aesthetics — slippery surfaces defeat the point. Place one to bed, one to couch, one to car. For cats, multi-step "cat stairs" with shallow risers work better than ramps because of how they jump.

Support harnesses

Different from walking harnesses. A rear-support harness with a handle over the hips lets you assist a dog up stairs or out of slippery floors without bending awkwardly. Brands like Help Em Up and GingerLead are well-engineered; in India, similar designs are available from pet-equipment shops at lower price points.

Toe grips and paw wax

For dogs slipping on tile and marble — common in Indian homes — silicone toe grips slip over the nails and add traction. Cheap, effective, slightly silly looking. Non-slip socks are an alternative but most dogs strip them off.

Joint supplements that have evidence

Glucosamine and chondroitin work best in combination, not separately. Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) reduce joint inflammation and the dose matters — 40 mg EPA + DHA per kilo of body weight per day is the studied range. Green-lipped mussel extract has growing evidence. Turmeric/curcumin is heavily marketed but most preparations have poor bioavailability.

Prescription pain relief

NSAIDs (meloxicam, carprofen) are the workhorses for arthritis pain. They're safe long-term with monitoring bloodwork. Gabapentin is added for nerve pain. Avoid human painkillers — paracetamol is fatal to cats, and ibuprofen is dangerous to both species.

Hydrotherapy and acupuncture

Both have solid evidence for joint pain and post-surgical recovery. Hydrotherapy clinics exist in most Indian metros now. Acupuncture in pets is done by certified veterinary acupuncturists and produces measurable pain reduction even in skeptical owners.
