Once you know your dog reacts to pollen, the flare-ups become surprisingly predictable. Working with the seasons rather than reacting to each itch keeps your dog far more comfortable and reduces the need for medication.

Track the pattern

Keep a simple diary of when the itching starts and stops. Tree pollens tend to peak in spring, grass pollens in the warmer months, and weed pollens and mould later in the year. After a season or two the pattern is usually clear, and you can start prevention a week or two before the flare normally begins.

Reduce the exposure

  • Walk early in the morning or after rain, when pollen counts are lowest.
  • Wipe down the coat, paws and belly when you come back indoors.
  • Wash bedding often and keep the dog's sleeping area clean.
  • A bath with a soothing shampoo during peak season rinses allergens from the coat.

Work with your vet

For dogs with strong seasonal allergies, your vet can offer options that range from medicated shampoos and omega-3 supplements to modern anti-itch medication and, in persistent cases, allergy testing and immunotherapy. Starting treatment before the season peaks is always easier than chasing a full-blown flare.
