The English Springer Spaniel: Tireless and Affectionate
The English Springer Spaniel is a sweet-faced, energetic bird dog blessed with great stamina, brains and an unshakeably friendly disposition. Built to work all day in the field yet devoted and loving at home, it is one of the most engaging of the sporting spaniels. Springers stand 48 to 51 cm tall, weigh 18 to 23 kg and typically live 12 to 14 years.
Bred to Spring Game
Spaniel-type dogs that closely resemble today's Springer appear in paintings dating back centuries. The breed earned its name from its job: it would flush, or spring, game birds into flight for hunters. For a long time Springers and Cockers were the same breed, separated only by size within a litter; the smaller dogs that hunted woodcock became Cockers and the larger flushing dogs became Springers, and the two were finally recognised as distinct breeds around the turn of the 20th century.
Temperament
The English Springer Spaniel is friendly, playful, obedient and energetic. It craves company and genuinely thrives on interacting with its people, which makes it a superb family dog but a poor choice for anyone who must leave a dog alone for long stretches. Intelligent and eager, it responds wonderfully to patient, gentle, reward-based training, and early socialisation brings out its confident best.
Exercise and Enrichment
This is a high-energy breed that needs plenty of daily exercise and mental work. Springers benefit from long walks, runs, fetch and the chance to use their nose, plus the room to stretch their fast-moving legs. Without enough activity and engagement they can become bored and restless, so an active home suits them best.
Grooming
The medium-length, weatherproof, slightly wavy coat needs brushing once or twice a week, with periodic trimming to keep it neat. Like all spaniels, the long ears should be cleaned regularly, especially after baths or swimming, to prevent infections.
Health Considerations
Generally a healthy medium-sized breed, the Springer can be prone to inherited conditions that responsible breeders screen for, most are manageable rather than life-threatening, including hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disorders and ear infections linked to those lovely floppy ears.
Who It Suits
The English Springer Spaniel suits active families and individuals who want an affectionate, biddable, exercise-loving companion and who will include it fully in daily life. Given purpose, activity and company, it is a joyful and devoted partner.
