The Newfoundland: The Gentle Water-Rescue Giant

The Newfoundland is a massive, sweet-natured working dog famous for its strength in water, thick weatherproof coat and profoundly gentle temperament. A born swimmer and lifesaver, the Newfie pairs the power of a draft animal with the patience of a devoted nanny. Adults stand 66 to 71 cm tall, weigh 45 to 68 kg and typically live around 9 to 10 years.

The Fisherman's Helper

The breed originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where in the early 1800s it worked alongside fishermen, hauling in nets and pulling fish carts to market. Its real fame, though, comes from the water: with webbed paws to power through the waves and a thick coat that insulates against frigid temperatures, the Newfoundland became, and remains, the world's premier water-rescue dog, still employed in that role today.

Temperament

The Newfoundland is sweet, patient, gentle and devoted. Calm and friendly at home, it is famously good with children, earning a long-held reputation as a watchful nanny dog, and it generally gets along beautifully with other dogs and cats. This is a dog whose enormous size is matched by an equally large, kindly heart, making it a wonderful, mellow family companion when given room and company.

Exercise and Swimming

Despite its bulk, the Newfie has moderate exercise needs: daily walks and, ideally, the chance to swim, which it adores and which is gentle on the joints. As with all giant breeds, activity for puppies should be controlled to protect developing joints, and care is needed in hot weather given the heavy coat.

Grooming and Drool

The thick double coat sheds a great deal and needs brushing several times a week, increasing during seasonal moults, to prevent matting and manage the fur. Prospective owners should also be prepared for serious drooling and keep a drool cloth handy.

Health Considerations

As a giant, deep-chested breed, the Newfoundland is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease (including subaortic stenosis), bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), for which a preventive gastropexy is sometimes considered, and urinary stones. A reputable, health-testing breeder and sensible feeding practices matter greatly.

Who It Suits

The Newfoundland suits families with space, time for grooming and the readiness for a giant, drooly, devoted companion whose years are precious. For a calm, loving home, few breeds offer such a gentle, heroic and big-hearted presence.
