The Poodle: Brains, Elegance and Versatility

The Poodle is one of the most intelligent, trainable and versatile of all dog breeds, wrapped in an elegant, curly, low-shedding coat. Far from being merely a glamorous show dog, it began as a hard-working water retriever and excels today in everything from family life to dog sports and service work. Poodles come in three sizes and live a long 10 to 18 years, with the smaller varieties tending to live longest.

From Water Retriever to Three Sizes

The Poodle is an ancient breed; curly-coated dogs with the distinctive clipped hindquarters appear on Roman and Greek coins and carvings from as early as 30 A.D. It was originally developed as a water retriever, and even the famous show clip began as a practical trim to protect joints and organs in cold water. In the 18th century the Standard was bred down to the Miniature and then the Toy to suit city dwellers, and the breed's brilliance made it a star of circuses and performances.

Three Varieties

  • Standard: over 38 cm tall and roughly 18 to 32 kg, athletic and a wonderful active family dog
  • Miniature: around 25 to 38 cm, a lively, clever medium-small companion
  • Toy: under 25 cm, a tiny, devoted lapdog with the same sharp mind

Temperament

The Poodle is intelligent, active, trainable and elegant. People-oriented, friendly and highly adaptable, it bonds closely with its family and thrives on company. Its remarkable intelligence, often ranked among the very top of all breeds, makes it easy to train and eager to engage, but also means it needs mental stimulation to stay content.

Exercise and Grooming

All Poodles need daily exercise and mental work, with Standards requiring the most. The curly, low-shedding, allergy-friendlier coat is a real commitment, growing continuously and requiring professional grooming every six to eight weeks plus regular at-home brushing to prevent mats.

Health Considerations

Responsible breeders screen their lines. Concerns vary by size but can include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and bloat in Standards, and patellar luxation, eye conditions and dental issues in the smaller varieties.

Who It Suits

The Poodle suits a huge range of households, from active families to apartment dwellers, who want a brilliant, trainable, low-shedding companion and will commit to its grooming and mental enrichment. Whatever its size, it is one of the most capable and rewarding dogs you can own.
