The Shiba Inu: Japan's Spirited Little Hunter

The Shiba Inu is a small, fox-like spitz breed and the most popular companion dog in its native Japan. Bold, alert and famously independent, the Shiba is often described as more cat than dog: clean, self-possessed and very much its own boss. Shibas stand 34 to 43 cm tall, weigh 8 to 11 kg and enjoy a long lifespan of around 13 to 16 years.

An Ancient Japanese Breed

The Shiba Inu is one of Japan's oldest and most treasured breeds, with ancestry reaching back thousands of years; it began as a nimble hunter and companion, working small game in the mountainous countryside and accompanying the Samurai. Having twice faced near-extinction, the breed was declared a National Monument of Japan in 1936 in recognition of its cultural importance, and it has since become a beloved icon worldwide.

Temperament

The Shiba Inu is alert, independent, confident and good-natured. Spirited and bold, it is loyal and affectionate with those who earn its respect but can be reserved with strangers and headstrong about following commands, sometimes voicing its displeasure with the famous, dramatic "Shiba scream." Notably catlike, it grooms itself fastidiously and is extremely clean, but its independence and high prey drive mean early socialisation, patient training and secure containment are essential.

Exercise and Enrichment

This is an active, agile breed that needs daily exercise such as walks and play, along with mental engagement to satisfy its quick, curious mind. Because of its strong prey drive and independent streak, a Shiba should be kept on lead in open areas and given a secure, escape-proof garden.

Grooming

The thick double coat sheds a moderate amount year-round and blows out heavily once or twice a year. Routine brushing keeps loose hair under control, with far more frequent grooming needed during those dramatic seasonal moults. The clean, odour-light coat needs little bathing.

Health Considerations

The Shiba Inu is overall a very healthy, long-lived breed. The most common concerns are environmental allergies, which can cause recurring skin and ear issues, and patellar luxation (slipping kneecaps); eye conditions are also seen in some lines. Routine veterinary care keeps most Shibas thriving well into old age.

Who It Suits

The Shiba Inu suits owners who appreciate an independent, dignified, low-odour companion and who will commit to early socialisation, secure management and patient training. Clever, beautiful and full of personality, it rewards respect with deep, if understated, loyalty.
