Cats are experts at hiding illness, which makes routine veterinary care more important than many owners realise. Regular check-ups and core vaccinations prevent serious disease and catch problems while they are still easy to treat.
Vaccinations
Kittens receive a course of core vaccinations starting at a few weeks old, with boosters to follow. Adult cats need periodic boosters as advised by your vet. Core vaccines protect against serious, common feline diseases; your vet will recommend the right schedule based on your cat's lifestyle, including whether they go outdoors.
Routine check-ups
- Healthy adult cats benefit from an annual wellness exam.
- Senior cats (broadly from around eleven) should be seen at least twice a year, ideally with bloodwork.
- Use visits to discuss weight, dental health, parasite control and any subtle changes you have noticed.
Make the most of every visit
Bring notes on any changes in appetite, thirst, litter habits, weight or behaviour, since these small shifts are how cats reveal illness. Routine deworming and flea prevention should also be part of the plan. Investing in preventive care is far easier on your cat — and usually your wallet — than treating advanced disease.
